Elk River Wildlife Management Area

Steep hills, ridges and benches dominate the area which is bounded by the Elk River and Sutton Lake. Mature hardwood forests cover portions of the area, making squirrel and turkey hunting particularly good. Brushlands provide excellent deer and grouse hunting. Habitat improvements have greatly increased waterfowl hunting potential. Two shooting ranges are available. Sutton Lake offers 1,440 acres, and Elk River provide excellent fishing. Anglers may catch largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass, walleye, channel catfish, bluegill and crappie in the lake. Elk River has all these species plus muskellunge, and the tailwaters are stocked with trout.

Directions: Exit 67 of I-79 at Flatwoods interchange; south on State Route 19/4; east on State Route 17 -- 3.7 miles southeast of Sutton and follow DNR signs to the Elk River section.
