Braxton County folklore:
Braxton County is also home to the infamous 'Braxton County Monster', also known as the Phantom of Flatwoods. On September 12, 1952, on a hillside in Flatwoods, West Virginia, a group of boys playing football at a playground saw an unidentified flying object flash through the sky and land on a nearby hilltop. The boys quickly ran to the nearest house, and told a mother and her two sons what they had witnessed. The mother agreed to accompany the group of boys to the hilltop to see if they could find what the boys believed to be a "saucer". As the group neared the hilltop, it became very foggy and they began smelling a strange metallic odor that burned their eyes and nostrils. A large ball of fire caught the mother's eye from about 100 yards away. They continued up the path toward the object until they were about 50 feet away, when the mother suddenly noticed a huge man-like creature about 12 feet tall and 4 feet wide. The creature had glowing eyes, a bright red face, green clothing, and a head that resembled a spade.
